Brewed with Tradition Since 1862

Our brewery honors Michigan’s oldest brewing tradition while embracing what’s next. We brew a rotating mix of classics and seasonal favorites, all made on site. Order a flight, grab a pint, or take home a growler. Frankie the Dachshund, featured in our logo, nods to our founder’s love for the breed and remains a symbol of the friendly, welcoming spirit behind every beer we make.

Our History

From Bavaria to Michigan  (1845)

The city of Frankenmuth’s story began in 1845 when 15 Lutheran missionaries and Bavarian settlers brought their brewing traditions to Michigan. Their dedication to craftsmanship, community, and heritage laid the foundation for what would become one of America’s oldest breweries.

The Cass River Brewery (1862)

In 1862, cousins William Knaust and Martin Heubisch founded the Cass River Brewery along the Cass River, marking the official birth of brewing in Frankenmuth. It became the first commercial brewery in the region and set the tone for generations of local brewing excellence.

The Geyer Legacy (1874)

In 1874, Johann Geyer purchased the Cass River Brewery and turned it into a thriving operation that would endure for more than a century. The Geyer family’s passion and innovation carried Frankenmuth’s brewing legacy through Prohibition and beyond.

Frankie the Dachshund

Johann Geyer’s love for dachshunds inspired the brewery’s mascot, Frankie. He has been featured on our beer labels, advertisements, and marketing materials dating back to as early as the 1930’s, making Frankie nearly 100 years old (or almost 700 in dog years)! Frankie remains part of the logo today, symbolizing loyalty, warmth, and the welcoming spirit that defines every visit to Frankenmuth Brewery.

Trials by Fire and Wind

Frankenmuth Brewery has faced its share of challenges. A major fire in 1987 and an F1 tornado in 1996 both destroyed large portions of the facility. Each time, the brewery and its community re-built stronger, preserving its place in Michigan history.

Rebuilt for Today

In 2003, Frankenmuth Brewery reopened with a 27,000-square-foot, multi-floor operation on the same historic site. Designed as a craft brewery, family restaurant and event space, it features modern brewing systems, two kitchens, a unique banquet venue and a large riverfront patio, blending tradition with a fresh experience for visitors.
